If you own a WD21 Pathfinder or D21 Hardbody with the FS5R30A 5-speed and you filled it until it dripped out of the side plug… it’s probably underfilled by over a liter.

Important: Filling through the factory side plug will only allow approximately 3.8L to enter the transmission. The FS5R30A manual transmission fluid capacity is 5.1 liters (5.4 US quarts). That’s over 1 liter low if you stop at the fill hole. This guide applies to Nissan WD21 Pathfinder and D21 Hardbody models equipped with the FS5R30A 5-speed manual transmission. It does not apply to later R50, R51, or modern Pathfinder models.

Nissan’s factory fill hole location does not allow the full 5.1L capacity to be added. That means many of these transmissions are running low – which leads to:

  • Notchy shifting

  • Premature synchro wear

  • Bearing failure

The Fix: Fill From the Top

To get the full 5.1L in, you need to remove the shifter boot and pour fluid in from the top of the transmission. It’s not difficult, but it’s a crucial step that most people skip – especially if they’re following a Haynes manual or old forum post.

This method ensures:

  • Full fluid coverage across all gears
  • Proper lubrication of internal bearings
  • Long-term transmission reliability

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Park the truck on level ground and make sure it’s secure.
  • Remove the shifter from inside the cab (you’ll need to pull the console and boot).

    With the shifter removed, you can access the transmission directly and add the full 5.1 liters of GL-4 fluid.

    1. Drain the old fluid from the transmission by removing the drain plug.

Always inspect the magnetic drain plug for metal particles. Excess debris can indicate wear from improper lubrication levels.

  1. Add 5.1L of fluid through the shifter opening.

    1. Replace the fill plug, shifter and boot.
    2. Double-check for leaks and shift through all gears before test driving.

    Why the Factory Fill Plug Doesn’t Work

    The FS5R30A sits slightly angled in the chassis. The side fill plug is positioned below the true oil level required for full internal lubrication. Filling until fluid runs out of the plug does not equal full capacity. Nissan addressed this lubrication issue in TSB NTB97-009a by revising the transmission case and raising the fill plug location in later versions.     What Fluid Should You Use?

    Only GL-4 spec Transmission Fluid is recommended in these transmissions. 

    GL-4 vs GL-5 – Why It Matters

    The FS5R30A uses brass synchronizers (“yellow metals”).

    GL-5 oils use aggressive sulfur/phosphorus extreme pressure additives designed for hypoid differentials. These additives can attack brass synchronizers over time.

    That leads to:

    • Worn synchros

    • Hard shifting

    • Premature rebuilds

    GL-4 fluids are specifically designed for synchronized manual transmissions.

    For best results:

      • 75W-90 GL-4

      • Synthetic preferred

    • Avoid “GL-4/GL-5 compatible” unless clearly safe for synchros
