FS5R30A Transmission Fluid Capacity and Correct Fill Method
If you own a WD21 Pathfinder or D21 Hardbody with the FS5R30A 5-speed and you filled it until it dripped out of the side plug… it’s probably underfilled by over a liter.
Important: Filling through the factory side plug will only allow approximately 3.8L to enter the transmission. The FS5R30A manual transmission fluid capacity is 5.1 liters (5.4 US quarts). That’s over 1 liter low if you stop at the fill hole. This guide applies to Nissan WD21 Pathfinder and D21 Hardbody models equipped with the FS5R30A 5-speed manual transmission. It does not apply to later R50, R51, or modern Pathfinder models.
Nissan’s factory fill hole location does not allow the full 5.1L capacity to be added. That means many of these transmissions are running low – which leads to:
Gear whine
Notchy shifting
Premature synchro wear
Bearing failure
I’ve run this transmission for over two decades in my one-ton swapped Pathfinder (“The Pathmaker”), including hard rock crawling and highway driving. After testing fill methods and fluid types, filling through the shifter to the full 5.1L consistently results in quieter operation and smoother shifts.
The Fix: Fill From the Top

Remove the shifter boot and console to access the top of the FS5R30A transmission.
To get the full 5.1L in, you need to remove the shifter boot and pour fluid in from the top of the transmission. It’s not difficult, but it’s a crucial step that most people skip – especially if they’re following a Haynes manual or old forum post.
This method ensures:
- Full fluid coverage across all gears
- Proper lubrication of internal bearings
- Long-term transmission reliability
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Park the truck on level ground and make sure it’s secure.
- Remove the shifter from inside the cab (you’ll need to pull the console and boot).

The snap ring must be removed to lift the shifter out and fill the transmission from the top.

With the shifter removed, you can access the transmission directly and add the full 5.1 liters of GL-4 fluid.
- Drain the old fluid from the transmission by removing the drain plug.

Removing the factory drain plug on the FS5R30A 5-speed transmission before refilling to full capacity.

Draining the old gear oil before switching to full 5.1L capacity fill method.

Always inspect the magnetic drain plug for metal particles. Excess debris can indicate wear from improper lubrication levels.
- Add 5.1L of fluid through the shifter opening.

Filling from the top ensures the full 5.1L (5.4 US quarts) capacity is reached — unlike the factory side fill plug method.
- Replace the fill plug, shifter and boot.
- Double-check for leaks and shift through all gears before test driving.

FS5R30A Transmission Fluid Capacity
The correct capacity is 5.1 liters (5.4 US quarts).
Why the Factory Fill Plug Doesn’t Work
The FS5R30A sits slightly angled in the chassis. The side fill plug is positioned below the true oil level required for full internal lubrication. Filling until fluid runs out of the plug does not equal full capacity. Nissan addressed this lubrication issue in TSB NTB97-009a by revising the transmission case and raising the fill plug location in later versions. What Fluid Should You Use?
Only GL-4 spec Transmission Fluid is recommended in these transmissions.
GL-4 vs GL-5 – Why It Matters
The FS5R30A uses brass synchronizers (“yellow metals”).
GL-5 oils use aggressive sulfur/phosphorus extreme pressure additives designed for hypoid differentials. These additives can attack brass synchronizers over time.
That leads to:
Worn synchros
Hard shifting
Premature rebuilds
GL-4 fluids are specifically designed for synchronized manual transmissions.
For best results:
75W-90 GL-4
Synthetic preferred
Avoid “GL-4/GL-5 compatible” unless clearly safe for synchros
Recommended Fluid (What I Personally Run)

I’ve been running Redline MT-90 for over 20 years with zero issues!
For over 20 years in my one-ton swapped Pathfinder, I’ve consistently run:
Red Line MT-90 (GL-4 75W90) – You’ll need 6 quarts to hit full capacity
Why MT-90?
Correct GL-4 additive package
Excellent synchro compatibility
Stable under heat from crawling or highway driving
Noticeably smoother shift feel compared to conventional gear oil
You might also need:
- Transmission Funnel for filling in awkward places
- Transmission Fluid Pump
- Snap Ring Pliers to remove snap ring on end of shifter
Why This Mod Matters
Running the correct fluid level is critical for transmission longevity. Tons of Nissan owners report smoother shifting, less gear whine, and better overall performance after doing this. Many FS5R30A failures blamed on “weak Nissan transmissions” are actually lubrication-related.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use GL-5 if it says GL-4 compatible?
Only if the manufacturer specifically states it is safe for synchronized manual transmissions. When in doubt, use a dedicated GL-4 fluid.
What happens if I underfill the FS5R30A?
Common symptoms include gear whine, notchy shifting, increased heat, and accelerated synchro wear.

you the man and just saved me alot of money in South Africa i have a nissan sani 3.0 V 6 VG30 and i didnt understand the gearbox problem i have until i found your website. im also looking for an engine book or gear box id love to see how this engine actually works, its a pick up i use to suport indigenous remote vilages with SAN Bushman viliges and i drive 5000 to 30 000 km a year with the pick up .
